Paxil vs. Effexor for Depression in Parkinson's Disease

Since June of 2005, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) has been conducting a study to find out how to better treat depression in Parkinson's disease. If you do any reading about Parkinson's disease, you know that around half of the people living with Parkinson's disease also confront depression at some time. There are a number of medications that treat depression. However, there is little information coming from research to identify treatments that are ideal for the population with Parkinson's disease.

Should I Be Taking CoQ10?

A study published in 2002 in the Archives of Neurology found that patients who took 1,200 mgs of Coenzyme Q10 daily experienced a 44% slower functional deterioration than those that took a placebo. (Click here to read a USA Today story about the study.) The study's authors were conservative, stating that "It would be premature to recommend the use of CoQ10 for the treatment of PD. Our results need to be confirmed in a larger, phase 3 study, and the appropriate dosage and the magnitude of effect need to be better defined."
