The Unsung Hero, The Caregiver

For those who are afflicted with Parkinson’s disease, it’s never easy to acknowledge our limitations. However, there comes a time in each of our lives when we must rely on loved ones or caregivers for assistance.

Depending on a caregiver is a significant change that requires acceptance and adjustment. By the same token, the caregiver faces a multitude of challenges by taking on this role. Whether you have a family member, friend, or licensed caregiver assisting you, being a caregiver can be overwhelming.

The number one challenge for a caregiver is dealing with stress. It is imperative that caregivers set aside time for themselves every day. Even if it is only 15 minutes, take that time. Sometimes taking a walk can help, or perhaps a bubble bath in the evening. Some caregivers will indulge in massage for themselves and the patient. The massage is a great way for Parkinson’s patients to keep their muscles toned, increase circulation, and relax. The caregiver can benefit from massage by relaxing their muscles, particularly in the neck and shoulders. Those muscles are the first to become tense. It can also provide relief if the caregiver does a lot of physical lifting. 

Another great way to devote time to you is to schedule a yoga class. This type of exercise stretches the muscles and provides a means for reflective meditation. Yoga is easy on the body and offers a good workout with the added leaves you feeling  invigorated.
