The Impact of Massage on Parkinson's

by Taryn SimpsonTreatments

One of the most troublesome symptoms of Parkinson’s disease is stiffness in movement. As a result of the stiffness, muscles tense and become sore. What could be better than a massage to loosen and relax muscles as well as the mind?

I’ve talked to some Parkinson’s disease patients who were hesitant to get a massage. As an enthusiastic supporter of massage, I will describe it in detail for those who have never been.

As a new massage patient, the best way to find a good therapist is by referral. You may want to call gyms in the area or hospital rehab centers for some names to interview. Or, you may want to call a family member or friend to see if they have a therapist they can recommend.

Once you find a reputable therapist, he or she will ask you about your health condition(s). Your therapist will need a list of your medications. Your therapist will also ask about any back, joint, or other injuries you may have. If you tell them you have Parkinson’s disease (and you should), they will know to expect stiffer muscles than the average patient.

The therapist will lead you to a darkened room with soft music in the background and a mattress table. You will need to remove your clothing, lie down on the mattress table, and cover your body with a sheet provided. After several minutes, the therapist will enter and begin the massage. Normally, therapists start on your face by massaging your temples and gradually going down your body to massage the neck and shoulders and so on. If the pressure is uncomfortable, tell the therapist so he or she can adjust. After all, this is to be a soothing and beneficial massage.

When you turn over, the therapist will hold the sheet in such a way that you are always covered, so there is no need for feeling embarrassed or shy. As the therapist moves down your body, he or she will pull back the sheet to only expose the leg or arm and then it is covered again.

The main thing to remember is to relax! Massage has several benefits aside from relaxation:

  • Increased circulation
  • Toned muscles
  • Eased digestion
  • Improved skin tone

After the massage, drink plenty of water to flush out any impurities in your body. I guarantee you will be booking your next appointment before you leave!
