Are you the type of person who prides him or herself on being self-sufficient in spite of having Parkinson’s disease? If you are, here are some tips to help you remain independent for as long as possible.
Organization is Key
Since Parkinson’s has a tendency to worsen over time, most patients can expect to have more difficulty in moving about and thinking clearly as the disease progresses. One way to combat those issues is organization. For example, try using a bulletin board that outlines your day. It can include various items such as:
- 9 a.m. Take morning medication
- 10 a.m. Walk the dog
- 12 p.m. Lunch with George/Take medication
- 3 p.m. Play Bridge with neighbors
- 7 p.m. Watch game
Notate everything you need to do, including house cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, paying bills, and so on. It will help you to keep track of what needs to be done as well as remind you what has been done.
Buy a Datebook
Write down any appointments you may. For example:
- January 25 at 2 p.m. – Doctor appointment
- March 30 at 9 a.m. – Appointment with CPA
Keep your datebook handy so you can write in appointments easily. Also use the datebook to take notes if you are having a bad day. Were you under more stress than normal? Did you have increased symptoms? How did it affect your ability to get things done that day?
This information will help you and your doctor keep track of how well you are doing.
These organizational tools will also help you know if you need assistance. Gradual assistance can be a great help and can keep you motivated to continue living independently without jeopardizing your health. Good Luck!
