Recently a reader emailed us asking:
“I was wondering if you have any info on a form of physical therapy called Feldenkrais Method? I have been told that it would enhance smoother movement for PD patients.”
Feldenkrais Method is not technically physical therapy, but it is a "repertoire of movements." It is a form of low impact exercise intertwined with meditation. To provide us with more insight, we checked with a talented physical therapist who specializes in neurological conditions. Her opinion is that it is an excellent way to be active, improve flexibility, and engage the senses. She encourages her patients to pursue Tai Chi, Pilates, and other exercises, when they are appropriate for them. Most exercise is beneficial, especially if you enjoy it.
Feldenkrais method may not work for some PWPs because some of the positions are difficult, and it requires a fair amount of getting down on the floor.
As always, please consider the cost of an exercise program compared to its benefit. It is also important to check with your physician about any new exercise plans. It may also be worth spending some time with a physical therapist to tailor an exercise program that benefits your symptoms.
We will be writing more about physical therapy in our newsletter on Monday. If you have provided us with your email address, you have been receiving our monthly newsletters. If you would like to register and receive our newsletters, please click here.
