The medication had shown promise for Parkinson's disease in earlier clinical trials. However, recent results from phase III testing have shown that there is little benefit to most patients taking the drug. It did not significantly reduce "off" time in patients with Parkinson's disease as it was intended.
E2007, also called perampanel, appears to hold some promise for other neurological conditions such as epilepsy and neuropathic pain. Its maker, Eisai, will continue to sponsor it through clinical trials for those ailments.
If it is approved, some physicians may prescribe it off label to people with Parkinson's.
