After the last edition of the Parkinson’s hopeDIGEST Newsletter, we received several e-mails with questions regarding herbal supplements or natural remedies that help treat symptoms such as fatigue.
We gathered information from some of the most reputable Parkinson’s disease resources, like the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, the Cleveland Clinic, and the Mayo Clinic. From what we’ve learned, there is little conclusive scientific evidence concerning the effect of herbal and natural supplements on Parkinson’s disease, treating symptoms, and slowing the progression of the disease.
Still, there are some natural supplements Parkinson’s disease patients can consider adding to their treatment regimen that may improve their condition. One important note: the regulations that help maintain the quality and safety of prescription medications do not apply natural supplements. It is equally if not more important for patients to discuss any changes in medication with their doctor before taking them. This will prevent problems with potentially dangerous drug interactions.
Coenzyme Q10
According to the Mayo Clinic, coenzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10, is necessary for basic cell function. The human body produces it naturally; however, levels of CoQ10 start to decrease as a person ages. Levels of CoQ10 have also been found to be low in patients with chronic conditions, like Parkinson’s disease.
For those patients, there are CoQ10 supplements. These antioxidant supplements may promote cell health. Scientists believe that abnormalities in cell function (specifically in the mitochondria) contribute to Parkinson’s disease. A recent clinical trail found that patients who took high doses of CoQ10 slowed the progression of Parkinson’s disease. However, experts still argue there is limited and unclear evidence supporting the use of the supplement as a treatment.
Even though CoQ10 naturally occurs in the body, it is still possible to experience an allergic reaction or side effects after taking a supplement. Side effects are typically mild and brief, and resolve themselves without any treatment. Those side effects can include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea, loss of appetite, heartburn, itching, rash, insomnia, headache, dizziness, itching, irritability, sensitivity to light, fatigue, or flu-like symptoms.
Vitamins
Several vitamins, including vitamin E and C, have been studied to determine their effect on Parkinson’s disease and its symptoms. There is some research that suggests that vitamin E may fight damage to brain cells caused by free radicals. However, a study specific to Parkinson’s disease found that vitamin E did nothing slow the progression of Parkinson’s or manage symptoms.
Still, vitamin E has very few side effects and so patients may continue taking this natural supplement. However, patients should always consult with their physician before adding to or altering their treatment plan.
Other Natural Treatments
Research is being conducted on several other natural supplements to determine whether they benefits Parkinson’s disease patients. Creatine, for example, increases levels of a certain chemical that gives energy to muscles and the brain. Scientists are examining the potential of creatine to prevent nerve cell damage. Similar studies are being conducted on a compound called glutathione and how it affects nerve cell metabolism. Certain foods, along with glutathione, are being tested to determine their antioxidant properties and how they may slow cell death. However, none of these chemicals, compounds, or foods has been proven as an effective way to treat Parkinson’s disease or manage symptoms.
