How to Handle Parkinson's and Social Situations Gracefully

by Taryn SimpsonLifestyle

How many times have you been out to dinner in a social or business setting where the guests weren’t aware of your physical condition associated with Parkinson’s disease? It’s human nature to not want undue attention drawn to what we consider our imperfections. But in social situations in unfamiliar locations, stress levels can quickly rise.

A quick glance around the restaurant or host’s home usually provides an indication of what your stress level will be. For example, are their stairs to the dining room? Is the room dimly lit? Is there lots of foot traffic throughout the restaurant or home? Learning to be gracious and honest in these situations can help put your mind at ease as well as help other guests feel comfortable.

Some of the issues that may present themselves in these situations can include pronounced tremors, stumbling, slowness to stand or sit, appearing “drunk”, soft speech, or staring. As we all know by now, anxiety can also worsen the symptoms. So, it makes sense to have a plan in place and keep your stress level to a minimum.

First of all, if your balance is an issue, be sure to use your cane or walker. Safety is the ultimate goal. If using a cane bothers you, many shops carry very attractive canes and walking sticks. This can also help create conversation regarding your fashion walking statement!

As you walk around the room, are you staggering as if you are drunk? Move around the best you can and if someone is staring at you or makes a comment, address it! A guest or host may not realize you have Parkinson’s. The best way to address this issue is honesty with a bit of humor. Once people are aware of your physical challenges, your stress will float away!

If the restaurant or host can make things more comfortable for you, by all means, request it! The object of the outing is to make everyone feel comfortable and that includes you.
